This is the original Niles bottle stopper mandrel. Through customer suggestions, the other mandrels evolved. This #2 Morse taper mandrel has a 3/8″ x 16 tpi threaded stud with the unique™tapered tapping flute making it the most efficient mandrel on the market. It also works with other projects: ice cream scoops, shaving brushes, pizza cutters, etc. It is black oxide coated to prevent rust. The 13/16″ diameter collar is the same size as stopper tops. A spanner hole makes it easy to get leverage when the wood gets difficult to remove (see photo): use a screw driver or allen wrench. The back end of the mandrel is threaded for a 1/4″ x 20 tpi draw bar. See Draw bars
Mandrels come with a thread-protector cap and 2 nylon washers (a spare because you will lose one!) to be used as a spacer to help keep some wood from locking on too tight when you are turning your project. *Tip: if the wood does get a death grip and you can’t get the project off the mandrel, put the whole thing in the freezer for 10 – 15 minutes and it will unthread once the metal shrinks.

Jon, the Powermatic 90 is a vintage model and we don’t make a mandrel to thread on the spindle. This #2MT-A will fit your lathe as it does have a #2 Morse taper.

I have an older version of the 2MT-A Mandrel, it doesn’t have the spanner hole. It is my favorite bottle stopper mandrel to use of all of them on the market. The workmanship and quality are unsurpassed, and of course the shoulder of the mandrel is the same diameter are the top of the bottle stoppers. It is absolutely dead center every time. I’m still from the old school and use a tap to thread my hole, I think it gives me a better fit.

Love your stoppers. No intention of buying elsewhere. I also have your mandrel. I do not use the tap feature on it though – I’ve found it much easier to use a standard tap That said – I much prefer your MT2 mandrel over my old one which required a chuck. Customer service is top notch as is the shipping speed and packaging.
