This Niles ™mandrel threads onto the head stock spindle and has the unique tapered-cut flute making it the best self-tapping mandrel on the market. It has a 3/8″ x 16 tpi threaded stud that works with just about all the stoppers on the market and numerous other projects: ice cream scoop handles, shaving brushes, pizza cutters, etc. They have a black oxide coating for rust prevention. The neck or step below the threaded stud is 13/16″ diameter which matches the tops of all my stoppers. This mandrel does not use a draw bar. It comes with 2 nylon spacers (a spare because you will lose one!) which are used to help keep the wood from locking on the mandrel as you turn it. Use a 1 1/16″ wrench on the flats to start turning mandrel off the spindle.
If you are making the whiskey stoppers, SS-620 and/or SS-630, you might like the mandrel adapters that are the same diameter as these 2 stopper styles.
*Tip: if the wood does get a death grip and you can’t get the project off the mandrel, put the whole thing in the freezer for 10 – 15 minutes and it will unthread once the metal shrinks. Also try a little beeswax or soap on the mandrel before threading it into the wood.
The shorter stub drill bits won’t “wander” if they hit a tight wood grain. The 5/16″ is the standard size when threading a 3/8″ hole; the 11/32″ is for dense wood, acrylic and resins.
The bottoming tap cuts threads all the way in unlike regular taps that leave about 1/4″ untapped and it makes threading quick and easy.

I am new to bottle stopper turning and the mandrel makes it easier. It is rock solid on the lathe. Niles products are top notch.
My only caveat is that the instructions on turning a stopper were a little hard for me to understand. Bu, my wife has a ring pull can opener.
Good products. Great service

I have been very impressed with your products. We have purchased the wine bottle stoppers and the brass stoppers and found them to be high quality. We also use your mandrel and threading tap. They both work well. We will be long term customers for Ruth Niles products.
William Powell –
Nothing but excellent service and products from Niles! I have ordered a couple mandrels and about a dozen wine bottle stoppers and am very satisfied with every piece. The mandrels are a perfect fit for my mini-lathe and they work very well for the wine stoppers I have turned. They make it easy to turn a beautiful piece from both wood and acrylic.

I purchased the 1×8 mandrel kit. The first shipment got lost in the system and another was sent straight away. I have since received the kit and am quite impressed with it. No jury rig for stopper mandrels and I now have rock solid stopper turning. I will be ordering more items from Niles. The international shipping is a bit of a nightmare but if ya want the BEST…..
Tom Bennett –
The mandrel I bought from you works great, zero problems with it.
Dave Taylor –
I absolutely love the mandrel. It really simplifies & speeds up the turning process when you can easily screw the mandrel directly on to the lathe instead of inserting a Jacob’s chuck, then a drawbar and finally inserting the mandrel.
Ethan Brinn –
I could not be happier with the bottle opener mandrel kit that I bought. It had everything I needed to make the process of turning the handle for the bottle opener so much easier. Keep up the good work!
Gunner Beddoes –
I didnt know I needed this, but now I won’t make another stopper without it. Works perfectly on my JET 1015vs. Came packaged highly cushioned and super fast shipping. Thread protectors on the threads as well which is nice. Very good quality.

I am completely satisfied with my purchases from you. I recently ordered a mandrel and bits along with some stoppers. Ordering was easy, follow up emails were promptly replied to when I had questions. I got my package ahead of schedule and the whole transaction felt a little more personal than what I have experienced with from other vendors.
Ken Palese –
Thank you for the opportunity to provide feedback. Honestly, I’ve always been very satisfied with your products and services, and impressed with the improvements and new products as they become available. Thanks again for great products and service. Ken Palese

I have used your stoppers for about two years. I mostly purchased them from other vendors, but likely will buy direct as I assume that works better financially for you. I can clearly say they are the absolute BEST stoppers I use.
I have tried several stoppers. That said I use only two. If I use a metal stopper it is always yours. I do use some cork stoppers and like those as well.
Your quality is the very best of any I have ever used. Threads on the rod are machined excellently. I don’t know who the machinist is that you use, but don’t change. Excellent work; really. They are beautiful to look at and a joy to construct the stopper with your hardware.
I also have your mandrel. Again the milling of that is just excellent. It fits my lathe perfectly, is quality metal and the self cutting threads are a treat to use.
Thanks for offering quality products. This is something that is sadly becoming harder and harder to find.
Thanks too for freely and completely answering questions when I sent them to you. I am grateful. Give your machinist a pat on the back. The two of you are a great team.

Thank you for sending your new Mandrel (#152) M33 x M30 for the Oneway lathe. The mandrel is very efficient since nothing additional is needed. I really like the way it threads directly on the lathe. One of my current wrenches fit it perfectly. The performance was excellent. The mandrel makes it a one step process, allowing for a labor cost reduction. I would definitely recommend this item

I purchased one of your bottle stopper mandrels, and although it is a spectacular idea, I just could not get it to work. I found it impossible to thread the drilled bottle stopper blank onto the “self-tapping” screw. The mandrel is perfectly machined, runs true and the finish is beautiful. It’s just the threading part that doesn’t seem to work. I’ve tried on both exotic and domestic woods, even tried by drilling with slightly larger drill bits.
Richard Scordato –
I’ve used several of your stoppers and am very happy with the quality. I also purchased your threaded mandrel that screws on to my headstock. That works great. Perhaps you should promote that more. I learned about if from Tim Yodel’s video.
Blaine Peterson –
I recently purchased one of your threaded mandrels (#152). I really like that it threads right on the headstock. Great idea. I will be ordering another one or two in the future. I also like all of your brass stoppers. I think they are really classy.
All in all I think your products are great. I was surprised to still get you hand written receipts. It must take you extra time and is a real personal touch.
Rob Stigler –
I got the 1.25″ x 8 tpi mandrel and it is perfect! Thanks! I have struggled to find something that was simple and accurate for holding my bottle openers and wine stoppers and this is exactly what I was looking for.
Shannon Wilkerson –
I absolutely love the mandrel. Very simple and intuitive to use. The bottle stoppers are top notch on build and quality. Nice touch with the stubby drill bit, because it provides the perfect depth for the mandrel and the bottle stopper. I couldn’t be happier!
Speros Pascalides –
Fabulous mandrel! Recently purchased one and love that fact I do not need a draw bar. The mandrel removes easily and the threads are solid. The self tapping feature makes the process quick and easy. I also love the plastic washer that gives you a little extra room, and ensures that your tools do not make contact with the steel. I would definitely buy again and recommend this mandrel as a top notch product.
Patrick Miller –
I like your products very much! The stoppers are very high quality. I’ll admit I’m still learning and trying to perfect the best way to thread the blank.
I find hard to try and thread the blank (round or square) on to the mandrel. I’ve seen T-bar handle thread cutting tools. Perhaps you sell this and I don’t know. I should check your site. But overall I really love your products and will be ordering more!
Norm Dallura –
I absolutely love your #152 Niles™ Mandrel. I use a chuck reversing adapter on my tail stick to align the mandrel while my piece is mounted in the chuck on the headstock. Once threaded, I just remove the chuck and mount the mandrel on the headstock. No more allthread to keep the Morse mandrel in the headstock. Thanks!!
